A turkey in Vinland

Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) are large-sized birds native to North America. Just like roosters, male turkeys have a wattle under their beaks.

Turkeys mainly live in hardwood forests foraging between the trees in search of acorns, nuts and berries. As Turkeys are omnivorous they also eat insects, small amphibians and reptiles. Turkeys are known for their distinctive gobble-gobble sounds they make.

History

During the 9th Century, Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered turkeys roaming the wilds of Vinland when she went there in search of Gorm Kjotvesson. When approached, male turkeys defended themselves by attacking her.[1]

Eivor also encountered the turkey named Arne on her travels through Vinland and helped it return to its owner.[2] She later came across Arne and his owner in Nyhofn together with the rest of the Toothbreakers.
