Thetford

Thetford (Norse: Theotford) is a town in the county of NorfolkEngland; formerly a town in the kingdom of East Anglia.

History

In the early 870s, Thetford, like the other East Anglian towns and villages, was one of those that were subjected to raids by the Vikings, in particular raiders from the clan led by Rued. Wynnstan, the reeve of Thetford, led the town in defense against the raiders, who took the nearby the village of King's Bury that housed the remains of the former King Edmund.[1]

Following the apparent death of Oswald, who were to be the next appointed king of East Anglia, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir, an ally of Oswald's, travelled to Thetford along with Finnr to request the aid of the town against Rued's remaining Vikings. Wynnstan, distrusting of Eivor and Finnr as they shared the same ethnicity as Rued's warriors, was skeptical in sending his men to assist in the fight. He then offered his help if Eivor is able to recapture King's Bury and blow the horn at the top of the church. When Eivor succeeded, Wynnstan and Thetford pledged their support to the allied cause against Rued's clan.[1]
