The Viper (died 404 BCE) was the alias of an Athenian woman who served the Thirty Tyrants' leader Critias as his head informant. She was known for wearing an armband in the shape of a viper.

Biography

In 404 BCE, the Viper attended a party at Critias' house in Athens. While there, she heard that fellow invitee and Critias' lackey Loukianos had lost his mask. Knowing an assassin could hide themselves, she decided to stay on the house's second floor and refused any masked individuals entry upstairs. Later, she met with a woman who had information on Kassandra, a misthios the Viper was looking for, and learned that Kassandra had been seen outside Loukianos' house earlier that day. She was unable to act on this, however, as a disguised Kassandra wearing Loukianos' mask killed her moments later, exactly as the Viper had feared.[1]
