Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus was a temple dedicated to the god Zeus in the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece.

History

Around 435 BCE the renowned Athenian sculptor Phidias finished the massive statue of Zeus made of gold and ivory, considered one of the Wonders of the World.[1] [2]

During the 428 BCE Olympic Games, the temple was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra with her friend Barnabas.[3] She visited the temple again at the request of Phidias soon after.[4]

Behind the scenes

Instead of its real marble pedimental sculptures, the temple has the same fictional bronze pedimental sculptures depicting the Gigantomachy, the battle between the Giants and the Greek gods in Greek mythology that are also shared by other temples in game.[5][6]

The metopes of the temple are true to its real counterparts and depict seven of the Labours of Hercules. They are also inaccurately depicted on the Parthenon and other temples in game.[5]
