A regular soldier

A regular,[1] also known generically as a soldier,[2][3] is any unspecialized footsoldier of a military. In many cases they were the backbone of the military's forces, constituting the bulk of its manpower in city garrisons and in war.[4][5][6] It is a generalized and imprecise classification of the common soldier with the basic standard of training and equipment, for which reason they have also been known colloquially as grunts.[7]

The Italian city-states of the late 15th and early 16th centuries distinguished them from units like Agiles, Brutes, and Seekers but not by rank. Their regulars ranged from run-of-the-mill militia to seasoned, professional captains.[1] The Regulars of the British Army were derisively referred to as "Redcoats" or "Lobsterbacks" by the Patriots,[8] whose own regulars in the Continental Army included militia.[5]

Behind the scenes

The regular soldier is essentially the basic enemy type of each Assassin's Creed game. This unit is normally not given a distinctive name. Official gameplay terms include "Soldiers" in the original Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed: Origins, "regular guards" in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood,[1] and "British Regulars" in Assassin's Creed III. While the Soldiers in Assassin's Creed are distinguished from higher-ranking and more powerful Elites (also known as Sergeants) and Leaders (also known as Commanders),[2] in Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood, Elites and Leaders are both classified alongside the Militia, the weakest enemy unit, as "regular guards".[1][9] The category is also not a consistent fixture across all games nor does it always correspond only to the weakest enemy.
