Nunobiki Falls is a waterfall near the city of Kobe in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan,[1] formerly part of the province of Izumi Settsu.
History
In the early 1580s, the sōhei Mitsumune of the Ikkō-ikki took shelter at the waterfall along with a number of his men after the destruction of their fortress in Osaka.[2]
In early 1582, the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe traveled to Nunobiki Falls on behalf of Kyonyo to recruit Mitsumune for their fight against Wada Koretake. Mitsumune was reluctant to become involved, as their numbers had greatly diminished following their war against Oda Nobunaga, and he also believed that Kyonyo would be disappointed if he learned that Mitsumune had lost a statue of Shinran he had been entrusted to protect. Wishing to get Mitsumune's support, Naoe volunteered to recover the statue, after which the sōhei and his men agreed to lend their aid to Naoe and Kyonyo's cause.[2]
