Angkor

Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Empire. It was also the rumored location of an Isu temple containing Pieces of Eden, which caused various parties, including the Assassins and Templars, to seek out the lost city in the early 18th century. At that point, Angkor's ruins were referred to by the locals as the "Lost City" or the "Land of Those Who Came Before".[1]

History

In the early 16th century, European explorer Ferdinand Magellan, aware of the existence of the Pieces of Eden, travelled throughout Southeast Asia looking for them. At some point, he managed to find the ruins of Angkor, though knowledge of them was lost with Magellan's death in 1521.[2]

At some point prior to 1725, the Dutch East India Company navigator Hendrik learned about Angkor's existence and follwed up on Magellan's trail to locate the ruins.[2] He was eventually successful during a company expedition in the jungles of Indochina and wrote down Angkor's location and other valuable information about the site in his personal sea log. Upon becoming stationed in Macau, Hendrik sought to find a way to return to the ruins,[3] but was killed before he had the chance to do so.[4]

Around this time, both the Assassins[1] and Templars[5] learned about Angkor and its alleged treasure and sought to find the lost city. The British Assassin Edward Kenway and the Japanese Templar Shimazu Saito competed with each other and with other factions, including the Hualien Trading Company,[6] the Far East Company,[2] and the Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins, to retrieve Hendrik's sea log, which was the only lead to Angkor's location.[7]
