Angkor

Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Empire.

History

On 24 December 1724, a member of the West Indies Brotherhood of Assassins met with Edward Kenway in London to pass along information gathered from an East India Company ship that Adéwalé thought Edward would find interesting. The message said that the natives called Angkor, the "Lost City" or the "Territory of Those Who Came Before", and called on Edward for a detailed investigation.[1]

At some point prior to February 1725, Hendrik, a navigator for the Dutch East India Company, found the location of the ruins of Angkor during a company expedition to Indochina. He documented his discovery in his personal sea log, and also told his friend John Young about it while drunk, not knowing that John would then steal his story.[1] Upon being stationed in Macau, then under the Portuguese Empire, Hendrik approached the Qing merchant Madam Lee to ask her to sponsor an expedition to Angkor, but she turned him down, believing his story to be absurd.[2]

In February 1725, both Hendrik and John Young were targeted by ninja from the Japanese Shimazu clan working for the Templars, who sought to find the ruins of Angkor and to silence anyone else who knew about them. While John was saved by Edward Kenway, who by this point had arrived in Macau to begin his own search for Angkor, Hendrik was not as lucky and was mortally wounded, only living long enough to reveal some information about Angkor to Edward and to give him a letter to deliver to his family.[3]

After learning about Hendrik's sea log, which had been purchased by Madam Lee,[4] Edward entered a race with the Templar Shimazu Saito to retrieve it, as it was the only remaining lead to Angkor's location. While the log was ultimately stolen by Saito,[5] Edward managed to retrieve a cipher needed to decode its contents, which had been intentionally encrypted by Hendrik. Edward also entered a partnership with Madam Lee, who agreed to fund his expedition to Angkor in exchange for dealing with the Templars and her business rivals.[2]
