James VI and I (1566 – 1625), born James Stuart, was King of Scotland as James VI from to his death and King of England and Ireland as James I from 1603 to his death.

Biography

With his reign, the crowns of England and Scotland were unified. In 1605, the Catholic extremist Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the King. Fawkes was arrested by Sir Thomas Knyvet before being executed.[1]

In the Palace of Whitehall in London, King James hosted receptions and performances in the Banqueting Hall that combined poetry, music, dance, and costumes. These performances, or masques, were a trademark of the Stuart dynasty and often promoted the divine power of the monarchy.[2]

James I also invested in the parks of London, like the St James' Park, adding gardens and a menagerie of exotic animals.[3] In the 1630's, the King commissioned the Lincoln's Inn Fields to improve the city.[4]
