Guy Fawkes (1570 – 1606), also known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics best remembered for his involvement in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Role in the Gunpowder Plot[edit | edit source]

On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Palace of Westminster, but was arrested by Sir Thomas Knyvet.[1] After his capture, Fawkes was trialed and executed in the Palace.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 1725, after John Young used the Fenghuang's cannons to sink Rajah's fleet at the Cebu harbor, Edward Kenway compared his bombardment to a "Guy Fawkes display".[3]

In 2010, Shaun Hastings worked as a junior professor and taught a course that included the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. As a result, on December 9, Shaun took the pseudonym "Guy Fawkes" when he released a letter detailing Abstergo Industries' inner workings to WikiLeaks. When Abstergo's CEO Alan Rikkin ordered the letter to be pulled, he incorrectly stated that Fawkes was involved in the French Revolution. When Caroline Grey corrected him, he snapped at her, claiming "We are making history here, the past is largely irrelevant."[4]
