Mackandal was an enemy of the Mentor of the Louisianan Assassins, Agate, and operated primarily in the Bayou of New Orleans.
François Mackandal was the former Mentor of the Louisianan Assassins, and the teacher of Agate, by 1765 he was dead but his name was used by an aspirant Templar impostor named Baptist.

Sometime in 1765, Mackandal had amassed a small following, though he sent a letter to one of his acolytes stating that he was "in want of nothing but more men to join [his] ranks" for a "sacred ceremony".
