Adéwalé (1692 – unknown) was a former slave from Trinidad, and a member of the Assassin Order. During the Golden Age of Piracy, he was also Edward Kenway's quartermaster aboard the Jackdaw.

When Edward Kenway was captured by the Templars and placed on a ship within the Spanish Treasure Fleet heading for Seville, he was shackled alongside Adéwalé in the hold.

Working together, the two escaped and neutralized the ship's crew, and freed the other pirate captives and absconded with one of the ships, a brig called El Dorado. Edward would later rechristen it the Jackdaw and make Adéwalé his quartermaster in return for his assistance.

Adéwalé taught Edward how to repair the Jackdaw and recruit crew members. Around the year 1715, Adéwalé pointed out scenes of interest to his captain, who could then intervene or ignore them.

In 1722, after years of serving under Edward as the Jackdaw's quartermaster, Adéwalé decided to pursue a new path, and join the Assassin Order. Before Edward returned to England, he gifted the island of Great Inagua to Adéwalé and the Assassin Mentor Ah Tabai, to be used as a new base of operations, after the discovery and continous attacks on the Assassin encampments on Tulum.

Eight years later, in 1730, Adéwalé found himself shipwrecked on the island of Saint-Domingue without a crew or weaponry. It was here that he found himself confronted once again with the realities of the slave trade.

Trivia

  • Adéwalé is a variant of the Yoruba name Adebowale, suggested to mean "crown has come home." [1]
  • Ubisoft confirmed that one of the single-player downloadable content additions included within the Season Pass will be focusing on Adéwalé's life, which is named Freedom Cry.[2]
  • Adéwalé is the second playable character to not be related to Desmond Miles in any way, with the first being Aveline de Grandpré.

Adéwalé may be Aveline de Grandpré grandfather because he may have Eagle Vision like her, and because of the hertiage they share.
