Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. From 1763 to 1960, it was also the capital of Brazil.[1]

On 14 May 1501, on his third voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, Amerigo Vespucci reached Rio de Janeiro Bay and Río de la Plata.[2]
By 1719, the Templars had a safehouse located in Rio de Janeiro. Grand Master Laureano de Torres y Ayala planned to use it to store blood vials containing the blood of members of their Order,[3] including his own (though he secretly used the blood of his bodyguard El Tiburón),[4] Woodes Rogers and Benjamin Hornigold.[3] However, the Portuguese fleet carrying the case of blood vials was ambushed by the pirate Edward Kenway and his Jackdaw crew, at the behest of Bartholomew Roberts, and the vials never reached their destination.[5]
