Bjorn was a Norse navigator during the 9th century and a citizen of Stavanger in Rygjafylke.

Biography

When Thorsteinn Silvertongue and his wife Gunnhilda ventured to the market in Stavanger Bjorn tried damaging their reputation by replacing the sail made by Gunnhilda with a low quality sail, claiming she made it deliberately weak so it would tear during their next raid. His intent was to make sure Thorsteinn wasn't welcome anymore on the next raiding expedition of jarl Harald Fairhair. Thorsteinn discovered the truth however, and Bjorn was exiled by Harald.[1]

Seven months later, Thorsteinn's navigator Frode abandoned him and his crew to venture with jarl Guthrum instead. Thorsteinn was in desparate need of finding a new navigator. After Gunnhilda found a new crew in Eikundarsund and Thorsteinn stocked up with supplies in Nottfall, they sailed to Helloya were Bjorn had lived solitary since his exile. Thorsteinn convinced him to become his new navigator, much to the dismay of Gunnhilda who didn't trust him.[2]

Bjorn navigated the crew to England where he eventually ended up with jarl Guthrum and his navigator Frode. When Guthrum and his army occupied Chepeham he ordered his men to not plunder the city. However, Frode and Bjorn had made plans to steal the relics and food from the local church, and slip away under the cover of night with their men, abandoning Guthrum. Frode jokingly called Bjorn the future jarl. Their plans were discovered by the monk Ealric who had been a prisoner of Guthrum for several months. Ealric told Guthrum the truth about who stole the relics and Bjorn wasn't happy with him because of it.[3]

At some point, Thorsteinn and Gunnhilda settled in Jorvik and opened a store there. At this point Bjorn was drowning in debts, having failed in trading with both the Picts and Anglo-Saxons. This included some dangerous people who weren't too happy he wasn't able to pay back their money. Bjorn approached Thorsteinn at his stall at Coppergate Market and asked him for help with his debt. Thorsteinn agreed to help and gave him several things to sell.[4]

After the marriage of Trygg and Eadith, Bjorn once again approached Thorsteinn saying the people who he was in debt with weren't happy and were looking for retaliation. He asked Thorsteinn for his help, which was granted. Thorsteinn send Gunnhilda home, and went with Bjorn. This was the last time Gunnhilda saw Bjorn or Thorsteinn alive.[3]

Not long after, Thorsteinn's spirit traveled to the Well of Mimir in Jötunheimr, where he discovered he had died and was betrayed by Bjorn. After seeking more answers from Odin and the Nornir, he was eventually helped by Freyja, who guided him to her realm Fólkvangr where he was reuined with his wife who had also died.[5] What became of Bjorn is not known.
