The Nabataean Kingdom, also known as Nabatea,[1] was the political state of the Nabataeans, existent from the 3rd century BCE[2] until its annexation by the Roman Empire in 106 CE.[3] It was based in the Arabian Peninsula, and its capital was at Petra, in what is now Jordan.[4]
By the middle of the 1st century BCE, the Nabataean Kingdom took control of the Al-Ula Valley, establishing their regional authority at Hegra. With the agricultural development of the region,[5] allied with the commerce through the Incense Road, which considered Hegra an essential stop,[6] the Nabataeans managed to accrue great wealth and their culture adopted and adapted influences from their many trading partners, such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece.[4] As part of their funeral customs, a number of necropoli were carved onto the many sandstone outcrops in the area,[7] examples of which include Al-Banat Mountain and the Tomb of Hayyan ibn Kuza.[8]
Already a key trading partner to the Roman Empire, Nabatea was annexed in 106 CE, under the reign of Trajan,[3] being renamed into Arabia Petraea.[2] Despite the annexation, Nabataean culture thrived for centuries after.[4]
