Æthelflæd (c. 870 – 918) was Lady of Mercia from 911 until her death.[1] She was the daughter of King Alfred of Wessex and Lady Ealhswith.
Biography[edit | edit source]
As a child, Æthelflæd was admired by the boy Esobert, who decided to prove his love to Æthelflæd by climbing a tower to retrieve a flower. With assistance from the passing Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, Esobert retrieved the flower and gave it to the princess as she went for a walk with her mother. The queen amusingly humored the boy's intention to marry Æthelflæd, and the two royals retired indoors.[2]
A few years later in the early 880s, Æthelflæd would instead go on to marry Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, to cement his alliance with her father.[1]
