Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton (1730 – 1795) was a British Regular during the American Revolutionary War.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Sent to Boston to help strengthen the position of general Thomas Gage, Clinton arrived in time to try and break the Siege of Boston,[1] later serving under John Pitcairn at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.[2]
In 1778, after William Howe resigned as Commander-in-Chief of the British forces, Clinton assumed command and was the British leader at the Battle of Monmouth.[1] He tried to draw George Washington into open conflict, though Washington knew such a maneuver would be unwise and relied on the efforts of the Culper Ring to keep his movements secret.[3]
In September 1780, Clinton, by way of his spy John André,[4] came into contact with the American traitor Benedict Arnold, who agreed to surrender West Point for the sum of twenty thousand pounds. However, this plot ultimately failed due to interference by the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton.[5]
