The Battle of Camarón was a conflict that took place on 30 April 1863 in Mexico, between the French Empire and the Mexican Republic as part of the Second French intervention in Mexico. The 10-hour clash[1] saw the death of Captain Jean Danjou as he attempted to protect a Piece of Eden.[2]
History
Jean Danjou led the French Army's Foreign Legion to a nearby hacienda to defend against the Mexican army.[3] Although many were killed or imprisoned, only Drummer Casimir Lai, seriously wounded and left for dead after the battle, managed to escape and was rescued by Foreign Legion's reinforcements, who had been charged with protecting and recovering a crystal skull that Casimir had smuggled out of the country and carried in his drum.[2]
