Mirage

(Still a mess)

The Master Thief of Anbar

  • Nehal: I hear what you are saying, Basim. But you paint a portrait of a world that cannot exist.
  • Basim: That is where we disagree.

[]

  • Nehal: There it is. The Winter Palace. Come, this way.
  • Basim: Right behind you.

[]

  • Nehal: Here. Let us wait for nightfall.

[]

  • Nehal: Does where you stand not awaken fond memories?
  • Basim: Not so long aog we were counting our spoils up here under the cover of night, just like this.
  • Nehal: The stakes were lower then.
  • Basim: And so too was the prize.
  • Nehal: Well, before you claim your prize you will first have to reach it. And as far as I can see, that will take some creativity.
  • Basim: We could always try the front gate.
  • Nehal: You will have to let me know how that goes for you.
  • Basim: Where are you going?
  • Nehal: I've had a clever thought. If your mind is absent of one, you should perhaps follow mine.
  • Basim: Wait!

[]

Infiltrate the Winter Palace

The Hidden Ones need a chest stolen. Jasib spotted guards taking it with them to the Winter Palace. The content of the chest is still unknown, but if the Caliph is involved, it is certainly worth the risk.

Nehal knows how to get into the palace, but there might be other ways to quietly sneak into this heavily guarded palace.

LOOK FOR ways to infiltrate the palace.

[]

  • Nehal: It is dark enough. Come.

[]

  • Basim: Nehal!
  • Nehal: Fastening yourself to my tail, Basim? Very sensible.
  • Basim: I know how you hate to be alone.

[]

  • Nehal: I saw some guards, just that way.
  • Soldier 1: ... and then roasted, stuffed lamb. Oh, yes.
  • Soldier 2: Lentils with lime sauce, pomegranates and lemon. I can taste it now.
  • Soldier 1: Shh! I heard something. A low roar.
  • Soldier 2: Indeed! My stomach!

[]

  • Soldier 3: Have you seen the guests? Such odd costumes.
  • Soldier 4: Keep your mouth shut. You'll only invite trouble talking like that.
  • Soldier 3: Why dress that way, is all I'm asking. It's not festival time.
  • Soldier 4: IThey are here to meet the Caliph about the chest that arrived this morning. Which, need I remind you, is none of our concern.
  • Soldier 3: Are you not curious?
  • Soldier 4: Even if I am, it will not break my focus.
  • Soldier 3: Well, it has broken mine.

[]

  • Nehal: Ah, good. This door may lead us inside.
  • Basim: Not without a key it won't.
  • Nehal: Hmm. Have a look around.

[]

Palace Orders

The Caliph has been summoned for an important meeting. I have been made aware of no details, but I must ensure the palace is adequately staffed and that patrols are increased. Double the presence on the roof and station two guards for every room he and the visiting party will pass through. Secure all entrances. No one is allowed in or out until after the meeting ends.

[]

  • Basim: Have a short nap. But not too short.

[]

  • Nehal: Any luck finding a key?

[]

  • Soldier 5: The Caliph appears unsettled. An unruly son is not helping matters.
  • Soldier 6: The young man is eager. It's his first time in the palace, is it not? Let him wander, I say. Cater to his needs. This meeting is supposed to be brief, after all.
  • Soldier 5: Here they are. Come.

[]

  • Soldier 5: Through there. The Caliph awaits you.
  • Soldier 6: They have arrived, Mawlay (my lord).
  • Al-Mutawakkil: Out. All of you. I am to meet with them alone.
  • Abu 'Abdallah: Father, let me stay!
  • Al-Mutawakkil: Take him.

[]

  • Nehal: Looks heavy. We'll never get it out of the palace.
  • Basim: Then I will just have to take what is inside.

[]

  • Al-Mutawakkil: Gentlemen. Welcome. Everything is in order.

One of the Order members opens the chest to check its contents.

  • Al-Mutawakkil: I understand this means a great deal to you. Rest assured, it will be well protected here.
  • Masked Figure: We will accept nothing less. We will carry out our work and return to you when we are ready. Be prepared, Caliph.

The Order members turn to leave.

  • Al-Mutawakkil: Ah, might I see it once? The contents? If we are to guard this with our lives we should know--

One of the figures approaches the Caliph threateningly.

  • Masked Figure: You saw nothing of this. You say nothing. Do you understand?
  • Al-Mutawakkil: Y-yes, of course. Perish the idea.
  • Basim: Now is our chance.

[]

  • Nehal: Someone is coming.

[]

  • Nehal: This way. Looks quiet.

[]

  • Nehal: I never thought I'd set foot in here. Just look at these arches. You could chisel off a piece and sell it for a hoard of gold. You didn't happen to bring a pickaxe did you?
  • Basim: I will keep it in mind for the next time we break into a palace.

[]

  • Basim: All right, Basim. Open. Snatch. Run.
  • Nehal: Basim, hurry!

[]

  • Basim: (quick exhale)

[]

  • Nehal: Basim!

[]

  • Male voice: dű-duàs hnomná arhzmr mnàæ gnsàsi hm més hr r n marhmid

[]

  • Al-Mutawakkil: Give me that!

[]

  • Al-Mutawakkil: No! La!

[]

  • Al-Mutawakkil: Do you have any idea what they will do to me?
  • Basim: Please, I -- I am sorry.
  • Al-Mutawakkil: This... This is your fault.

[]

  • Basim: Stop [sic] Please... !
  • Al-Mutawakkil: You thieving little rat!

[]

  • Basim: No...
  • Nehal: Run!
  • Basim: Nehal, wait!
  • Abu 'Abdallah: Father?...
  • Soldier 7: Get that boy!

[]

  • Soldier 8: Ring the bell! The Caliph is dead!

[]

  • Basim: What ... what have we done?

[]

  • Basim: Nehal ... she just... What was she thinking? I need to find her. She would have gone back home.

[]

  • Basim: Nehal!

[]

  • Basim: No. Stop this. Please! What do you want from me?

[]

  • Basim: (labored breathing)
  • Roshan: Calm! Calm, Basim.
  • Basim: Nehal?
  • Roshan: Not quite. Are you well?

Basim nodded.

  • Roshan: Good. Because I need you to tell me about ... this.
  • Basim: I do not know what you mean.

They overhear noise coming from outside.

  • Soldier: Search over there.

[]

  • Roshan: Tell me what happened. Silence is not your ally here.
  • Basim: It is not silence. I cannot explain what I saw. That object. It did something to me. I was ... somewhere else. Cold. And frightened. Before I knew it, the Caliph had his hands around my neck. I ... it was an accident, I did not mean for ... just wanted to help.
  • Roshan: We need to get you out of here. I have a boat at the western docks.
  • Basim: What? No, I-I cannot leave. I need to find Nehal.
  • Roshan: Stop and think, Basim. The Caliph's guard is searching for his murderer. A young thief of your description. They will not stop until they have found you. And when they do, it will not be a prison they throw you into. It will be a shallow grave. I am giving you a second chance. Take it.

Roshan left.

  • Basim: Nehal ... Dervis ... they are all in danger!

[]

  • Basim: The soldiers are hunting all who look like me.

[]

  • Soldier: We are not to show mercy, men. Is that clear?

[]

  • Basim: I will not be safe for certain if I do not lose these guards.

[]

  • Nehal: Basim. Basim! Avert your eyes.
  • Basim: (scream)
  • Nehal: There is nothing we could have done.
  • Basim: Nothing? If the Caliph were alive, this would not have happened!
  • Nehal: Watch where you point your blamey little finger, Basim. It was your idea to steal from the palace. All so that you could impress your cunning friends. I saved us.
  • Basim: You killed them! You did this!

[]

  • Soldier: It came from over there.

[]

  • Basim: I hope I never see you again.

[]

  • Basim: All of them dead ... when it was me they sought to punish. I ... I... I cannot be here. I cannot.

[]

  • Soldier 9: Stop. Is it him?

The soldier dragged Basim and shoved him towards another soldier, who took a good look at his face.

  • Soldier 10: I think so.

[]

  • Soldier 9: Good enough.

[]

  • Roshan: Move!

[]

  • Basim: What are you doing?
  • Roshan: Don't think.

[]

A New Beginning

Alamut Two months later []

  • Basim: A new day. Another test. I should get back.

[]

  • Roshan: If you do not have faith in yourself, then who will?

[]

  • Roshan: There you are. Are you ready?
  • Basim: I... I think so.
  • Roshan: Put yesterday out of your mind. It has no bearing on today.

[]

  • Roshan: Get dressed and we can begin.

[]

  • Roshan: Go on, Basim. Like we practiced.
  • Basim: Yes, master.

[]

  • Novice: You look strong today, Basim! Keep training!

[]

  • Basim: Steady, Basim. Steady.
  • Roshan: Leap! Now!
  • Basim: Yes, master!

[]

  • Roshan: I've seen enough. We will try again tomorrow.
  • Basim: I felt fine.
  • Roshan: I can see it in your body. You lose focus too easy. The Leap of Faith is a crucial step on your path to initiation. It is one of the Brotherhood's first and most sacred rites. To perform it successfully, you must first center your mind, body and spirit. Embrace the fear. Quiet it. Find the stillness. And let go.
  • Basim: Yes, Master.
  • Roshan: Let's return to the camp.

[]

  • Basim: May I ask you something?
  • Roshan: You may.
  • Basim: Back in Anbar, at the palace, I witnessed a meeting between the Caliph and five masked men. Order members. The Caliph was meant to protect the object they discovered, but he knew nothing of their plans for it. He did not even know them by name. How does the most powerful man in Baghdad bend such a fearful knee to the faceless?
  • Roshan: The Order has held dominion over such men and their empires for centuries. By convincing them of their truth, that they are the natural arbiters of the world. The Caliph was but their puppet, and the same will be true of whomever succeeds him. The entire Caliphate is under their influence.

[]

  • Roshan: Basim, speak with Fuladh and see if he needs any help. We will continue your training later.
  • Basim: Yes, master.

[]

  • Roshan: Have you seen Mentor Rayhan in camp?
  • Hidden One: He is preparing to receive the Tahirid emissary, master.
  • Roshan: Thank you.

[]

  • Basim: Good day, Tabid!
  • Tabid: Hello, Basim.
  • Basim: What troubles you?
  • Tabid: Truthfully, I am frustrated. The Order has only grown stronger in Baghdad since the death of the Caliph. And we are stuck on this mountain.
  • Basim: Mentor Rayhan surely knows what he is doing...
  • Tabid: Maybe I should trust more.

  • Basim: Have you seen Fuladh?
  • Tabid: Probably at his office, as usual? Anyways, I must get back to work.
  • Basim: Araka Lahiqan (see you later)!

[]

  • Basim: How is Nur the brave eagle?
  • Nur: Will he fall or will he soar?
  • Basim: You will soar, ya sadeeqi (my friend)! Insha' Allah! (God wills it!)
  • Nur: Thank you. We have a similar spirit, you know?
  • Basim: What gave you that idea?
  • Nur: One of the Banu Musa was angry at you and you were unfased. Remember?
  • Basim: I did not touch his hammer.
  • Nur: You refused to apologize for something you did not do. I respect that. Stubborn like me!
  • Basim: I have been called worse.

[]

  • Basim: Have you seen Fuladh in camp?
  • Nur: I have seen him speaking to Ahmad near his office.
  • Basim: Araka Lahiqan (See you later)!

[]

  • Basim: How are these fine animals, ya khaiyal (horse-keeper)?
  • Horseman: Hale and healthy!
  • Basim: Are they native to this area?
  • Horseman: They came with us ten years ago, when we set up our camp. Zul-Janah was born here.
  • Basim: She is a beautiful horse. Thank you for introducing us.
  • Horseman: Take care, ya sadeeqi (my friend)!

[]

  • Fuladh: I may get back to you on this.
  • Ahmad: Of course!
  • Fuladh: Ah, what is this in the corner ... here? A small design?
  • Ahmad: It is my signature. So you know that I created this and not Al-Hasan or worse, Abu Jafar!

[]

  • Ahmad: I jest, you understand? Wada'an! (Farewell!)

[]

  • Fuladh: Ah, Basim. How are you?

[]

  • Fuladh: Yes, Enkidu! Food is coming! He is intelligent. And intelligence is supposed to rhyme with patience! Reminds me of someone...
  • Basim: Have you been speaking to Master Roshan?
  • Fuladh: Have patience... Be kind to your progress.
  • Basim: I will take this to heart. Roshan asked me to come see you?
  • Fuladh: Ah, yes! Rebekah needs leather strips. Can you fetch those from the store-room?.
  • Basim: I shall, Fuladh.
  • Fuladh: Araka Lahiqan! (See you later)!

[]

  • Basim: That is not it.

[]

  • Basim: It's hard to find anything in here.

[]

  • Basim: No, that is not a strip of leather.

[]

Don't forget the feathers

Fuladh,

Be sure to remind the Bureaus in Baghdad to return every bloodied feather and mission report to Alamut. Each feather is a victory; they must be collected and chronicled, not consigned to the heap of history. This is not mere ceremony. Future generations of Hidden Ones will look to our records for guidance. Our past must instrucct out future, it cannot be erased.

- Mentor Rayhan

[]

  • Tahirid emissary: These forces within the Caliphate are beginning to pur pressure on us.
  • Rayhan: Forces? You mean the Order, Aban.
  • Tahirid emissary: I... can only speak of what I know, ya sadeeqi. The Caliph wishes to nullify the rebels and if you persist in giving them support... we cannot assure you protection from any ... Caliphate response.
  • Rayhan: The rebels supply us with information in Baghdad. Without them, we are blind.
  • Tahirid emissary: Be that as it may, Governor Muhammad is very commited to showing that he can end this rebellion swiftly.
  • Rayhan: I do not doubt that.
  • Tahirid emissary: I came to warn you. Things are moving fast in Baghdad. You may have to act sooner than expected.
  • Rayhan: I hear you, Aban.

[]

  • Basim: So the Tahirids who govern these lands are the only thing standing between Alamut and a full scale attack. A fragile peace. How long will it last?

[]

  • Basim: How does construction go?
  • Worker: Ah, it is taking longer than we expected, ya sayyidi (sir). Mentor Rayhan is a wise man but he speaks of this mountain as if it was destined that we build here. We have patience and follow his guidance.
  • Basim: Master Roshan tells me I must not be in a hurry to rush back to Madinat as-Salam (The City of Peace).
  • Worker: I would not hurry at all. Baghdad is ... different now. It is very dangerous.

[]

Let Me Go

Azadeh,

They tell me you are still searching. Still chasing rumor and calling my name. The woman you pursue is dead and that name is buried with her. I am Roshan. Daughter of none. Sister of many. I drown my pain in brotherhood. You can have no part in this fellowship, for the cause is cruel to our kin and I will not see you hurt.

Turn back, old friend. Seek me no more.

[]

The First Blade

Dear Roshan,

I have enclosed with my letter a rare find: an ancient sketch of a Hidden Blade, the very first. You see it's title: Xerxes's Bane. This was the weapon of Darius. I know not if our famous ancestor ever returned to his beloved Persia after his betrayal, but I thought I would return this etching of his blade to his native shores, and to you.

- Itamos of Greece

[]

  • Basim: Rebekah?
  • Rebekah: Basim, Basim ... are you just wandering the camp aimlessly now?
  • Basim: No, I have this leather for you. Will it do?

[]

  • Rebekah: Apparently, you've moved past the wooden swords. I protested, but Roshan insisted.

[]

  • Rebekah: Here is your dagger.

[]

  • Rebekah: And your sword. I am proud to have worked on them.

[]

  • Basim: This blade has character!
  • Rebekah: Why would I make anything less than unique?
  • Basim: I am in your debt. I was not expecting new weapons today!
  • Rebekah: Repay me by using them on the Order. Make them feel the sharpness of its character!

[]

  • Rebekah: Roshan said you had further training today? Show her that new sword of yours!
  • Basim: I look forward to it!

[]

  • Novice: Blessings upon you, Basim.
  • Basim: How does training go, ya sadeeqi (my friend)?
  • Novice: Nur showed me a new way to grip my knife and it has improved my accuracy greatly! If you throw it just so, it sails through the air swift and true! Shall I remind you how to use a knife?

[]

  • Novice: Ya ilahi! (My God!) Well done!

[]

  • Novice: You have inspired me to train harder!
  • Basim: This is the way, ya sadeeqi (my friend)!

[]

  • Basim: As-salamu 'alaikum, ya sayyidi. (Peace be upon you, sir).
  • Worker 2: Wa 'alaikum as-salam! (And peace be upon you!)
  • Basim: I was out in the mountains earlier and the sight of Fortress Alamut filled me with awe.
  • Worker 2: Mentor Rayhan told us to take inspiration from nests the eagles construct in the Alamut peaks.
  • Basim: I can see the influence. Wada'an. (Farewell.)
  • Worker 2: Rafaqaka Allah! (May God accompany you!).

[]

  • Basim: As-salamu 'alaikum, ya sadeeqi. (Peace be upon you, my friend).
  • Worker 3: Wa 'alaikum as-salam! (And peace be upon you!) Did Fuladh send you?
  • Basim: No, he did not.
  • Worker 3: You're not here to help move these rocks?
  • Basim: I am quite sure that was not me.
  • Worker 3: I do not mean to be rude but I have no time to talk. I must figure this out.
  • Basim: I will leave you to it, then.

[]

  • Roshan: Good work. Until tomorrow.

[]

  • Roshan: Basim. Time for combat training.
  • Basim: I was surprised when Rebekah handed me this. Is a sword not a coarse weapon for a Hidden One?
  • Roshan: As Hidden Ones, we must become proficient with a number of weapons. You never know how a fight will escalate. Anyone can wield a sword. But how will you use it?
  • Basim: I am here to learn that, master.
  • Roshan: Are you truly here?
  • Basim: Well... yes. I believe so.
  • Roshan: You are here in body but are you here in mind and soul?
  • Basim: Is this ... a riddle?
  • Roshan: No. It is the difference between life and death.

[]

  • Roshan: Make sure you target and circle around me. Never turn your back on your opponent.

[]

  • Roshan: What are you doing? Are you trying to get stabbed in the back?

[]

  • Roshan: Yes, better! Show me your quick stabs first.

[]

  • Roshan: Good.
    Yes.
    Excellent!

[]

  • Roshan: There are times when we must put more force into our attacks to cause more damage. It was leave you exposed, so time it properly! Now go!

[]

  • Roshan: That's it!
    Come in strong!
    Excellent!

[]

  • Roshan: Now, for defense. You can parry the attacks of your opponent. After a few sucessful parries your opponent will be stunned. Try to parry my attacks.

[]

  • Roshan: Yes.
    That's good.
    Excellent!

[]

  • Roshan: Some attacks cannot be parried, and must be dodged instead. Prepare yourself!

[] []

  • Roshan: Good work.
    That's the way.
    Well done.

[]

  • Roshan: Now, let us try a free fight together. Use what you've learned.

[]

  • Roshan: That took me by surprise. Well done.

[]

  • Roshan: Some attacks cannot be parried, and must be dodged instead. Prepare yourself!

[]

  • Basim: Agh! Take that!
  • Roshan: Where did that come from?

[]

  • Roshan: We are done for today, Basim.
  • Basim: Why must we stop? I learn nothing from failing.
  • Roshan: True learning requires action and stillness in equal parts. You have made the action. Now, seek the stillness. Do not rush your training. Be patient. Failure is a part of progress. Think on these words and come back better.
  • Basim: Yes, master, I will.
  • Roshan: Good. See you later.

[]

  • Abu Jafar Muhammad: Ahmad will soon go back to the House of Wisdom. I fear he may end in a middle of a snakes' nest.
  • Fuladh: I know how close you are to your brother. We shall learn more soon. Then we can act.
  • Basim: As-salamu 'alaikum, Abu Jafar.
  • Ahmad: It is Ahmad.
  • Basim: Ahmad. My apologies.
  • Ahmad: Do not worry. Come and warm yourself by the fire.
  • Rebekah: Our brother Ahmad is leaving us tomorrow.
  • Ahmad: To Baghdad. The House of WIsdom.
  • Basim: The House of Wisdom?
  • Ahmad: We have been working there, my brothers and I, for years. I still have some things to work on. Science waits for no one. And I will fulfill my duty as a Hidden One by becoming your eyes and ears among the scholars.

[]

  • Rebekah: Fuladh, tell Basim the story of the feather.
  • Fuladh: Our tradition of the feather comes from Egypt. They represent the feathers of Ma'at. The feathers of the heron were dipped in the blood of the targets. These would be left for the Lord of the Duat to judge. It is important we remain humble and know our place in the process. We are messengers of justice and not the final judges.

[]

  • Nur: Will anyone help me on patrol tonight?
  • Basim: I will come with you, Nur. I must get my body moving if I am to warm up tonight.
  • Nur: I am grateful. Let us go.

[]

  • Nur: Are you coming, Basim? Leave the stories for later!

[]

  • Rebekah: We have not had a messenger from Samarra in quite a while.

[]

  • Basim: May I speak to you in confidence?
  • Nur: You know you can.
  • Basim: I overheard Mentor Rayhan speaking to an emissary earlier... Mentor Rayhan asked if we may come under attack for dealing with rebels in Baghdad? Are we safe here in Alamut?
  • Nur: I do not know ... but I pity the people who attack this nest of eagles!

[]

  • Nur: How goes the watch?
  • Sentinel: Nothing happened at all on Alamut and I am so hungry. We did not make it to the main canyon.
  • Nur: Excellent. We will start there. Thank you.
  • Basim: Come, Nur. Follow me!

[]

  • Nur: Are you looking forward to your initiation?
  • Basim: Yes. It feels like I have been preparing my whole life for this.
  • Nur: I could not sleep the night before my ceremony. From excitement and a small bit of fear, if I am to be honest.
  • Basim: We all fear the unknown, but a greater unknown awaits on the other side of initiation.
  • Nur: You speak of the Order?
  • Basim: I see them as monsters from a tale: hiding in dark corners, down dark alleys.
  • Nur: The difference is that the Order is real.
  • Basim: What do they want?
  • Nur: They want to control Baghdad. They want power.

[]

  • Nur: This is Muhja.
  • Basim: Magnificent.
  • Nur: Soon, you shall have one of your own!
  • Basim: Fuladh introduced me to an eagle named Enkidu. He said we have much in common. And ... not in a complimentary way.

[]

  • Nur: She sees something. Follow me!

[]

  • Nur: Shh. Quietly, Basim.

[]

  • Nur: Find a place to hide...

[]

  • Mercenary: What is this place?
  • Mercenary: We must be nearing their camp. We have the element of surprise.
  • Mercenary: Be ready.
  • Mercenary: Stop making so much noise!

[]

  • Nur: Quickly.
  • Basim: I am behind you!
  • Nur: We must strike fast!
  • Basim: Agreed!

[]

  • Nur: We must wait for the right moment...

[]

  • Nur: Do not make a noise...

[]

  • Mercenary: You are done for! Prepare for hell!

[]

  • Nur: Yes! Show no mercy!

[]

  • Nur: Not like the wooden targets, is it?
  • Basim: It is not that. This sword...
  • Nur: What of it?
  • Basim: Mercenaries from Baghdad use these weapons.
  • Nur: We must warn the others.

[]

  • Nur: Mercenaries from Baghdad.
  • Roshan: How do you know?
  • Nur: Basim recognized the make of the sword. I believe him.
  • Rayhan: Bring him in.

[]

  • Rayhan: How do you know these men were from Baghdad?
  • Basim: Growing up on its streets, I have seen their weapons many times ... and closely.
  • Roshan: Behind every mercenary is a man who gave them their orders.
  • Rayhan: Yes, and we must act if we are to learn who that is. We will return to Baghdad, seek Ali ibn Muhammad's help.
  • Roshan: Ah, of course. Sahib az-Zanj? (Chief of the Zanj?) He is a dangerous and delusional fool.
  • Rayhan: Maybe so ... but he is one of our only allies in Baghdad. We need him and we need his men.
  • Nur: I will go back to Baghdad.
  • Rayhan: Go to Ali. Find out if the Order sent those men.
  • Nur: I will.
  • Rayhan: Waffaqaka Allah (May god grant you success).

  • Basim: 'Waffaqaka Allah. (May god grant you success.)
  • Nur: Wada'an. (Goodbye.) Araka Lahiqan!

Nobility of the Xiongnu

[memory description:] In the General's Residence, you discover that the culprit has connections to the Xiongnu. You decide to leave the city to investigate, but first you need to find a guide that knows the Frontier.

[As protag leaves Meng Tian's house, Yu Ying calls out to them]

  • Yu Ying: Over here!

[protag approaches]

  • Yu Ying: Glad to see you made it out in one piece.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: The general says that the purple Qin troops are acting out of his command.
  • Yu Ying: So then who does commands them?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: He isn't sure but he suspects whoever it is working with the Xiongnu.
  • Yu Ying: The Xiongnu... I saw some of the general's troops taking some Xiongnu to Yangzhou Prison.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Yes, he told me he was rounding them up. If they're working with these purple Qin soldiers, one of them might know more. If we can offer them freedom... Maybe they can help us.
  • Yu Ying: You want to break them out? Of the great general's prison?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: We don't know a single thing about the Xiongnu. Their customs, traditions, ways of life. If we want to travel beyond the wall to find out their connection to Chu's murderer, we need to find an insider. Even if that means breaking into the general's prison.
  • Yu Ying: I... You're right. Follow me. I know exactly where the prison is.

[Yu Ying starts leading the protag there]

  • Yu Ying: The general isn't gonna be very happy if he hears you broke into his prison.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Then I'll have to make sure he doesn't know it's me.
  • Yu Ying: Come on. We're here. It's heavily guarded, so be careful. I'll meet you at the market stalls in Yangzhou when you're done.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Hopefully with a friend.

[protag infiltrates prison]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: This place is filled with the general's guards. I should try to keep a low profile.

[they find the place where the prisoners are kept]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: There, a Xiongnu. If I can get him out, maybe he can help us navigate their lands.

[protag comes upon an interrogation]

  • Xiongnu prisoner: I have spent so many moons living in this city. I am no longer in touch with the goings-on of my people.
  • Guard: Liar! Your Xiongnu people must have attacked the wall for a reason.
  • Xiongnu prisoner: And if they did, I a m unaware of it.

[protag deals with the guard and frees the prisoner]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Come on, let's get you out of here.
  • Xiongnu prisoner: Who are you? What do you want with me?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Escape first, talk later. Quickly, before we get caught.
  • Xiongnu prisoner: So I take it you do not work for the Qin Empire?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I work for its people, not its leaders, no.
  • Xiongnu prisoner: And what do you want with me?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I will explain when we are far from listening ears.

[the pair leave the prison and meet with Yu Ying at the market]

  • Modu: So I should thank you two for my rescue. You are both... rather young.
  • Yu Ying: We didn't do it out of the kindness of our hearts.
  • Modu: I didn't think so. So, what can a lowly Xiongnu like myself do for you?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: We need information. We plan on travelling beyond the wall and could use a guide. Someone who knows Xiongnu culture.
  • Modu: Look no further. I am a subordinate of Touman Chanyu himself. The leader of the biggest Xiongnu tribe. In return for freeing me I will show you the ways of the Xiongnu. Now let us move before more guards arrive. I'll see you at the beacon tower in the northern wall.

[Modu leaves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: He's too friendly to trust.
  • Yu Ying: I will keep an eye on him. Meet us as soon as you're able.

[protag nods, yingying leaves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: That Xiongnu seemed too eager and willing to help us. He's hiding something, but I don't know what other option we have.

[Protag goes to Great Wall Watchtower, where Yu Ying and Modu are waiting]

  • Modu: There you are. I was just about to explain yo your friend the situation of my people.
  • Yu Ying: He's actually... been nothing but cooperative.
  • Modu: My people are a scattered one. We roam the lands, pausing where there is water and grass for our herd to pasture. When the grass has been chewed to dirt, we move. Because of this, it's impossible to know exactly where a tribe is. Unless you know the winding ways of our herders.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: You propose we travel with you while you search for your tribe?
  • Modu: No, you would only slow me down. There is a small village inside the Mu Us Desert. Wait for me there.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: And leave you to return to your tribe all on your own? Do you take us for fools?
  • Modu: I give you my word and my honor as a Xiongnu that I will return to the Mu Us Village the moment I locate my tribe.
  • Yu Ying: And how much weight does your word hold exactly?
  • Modu: I suppose you'll have to find that out. Or we can travel together slower than a tribe roams, and find nothing. Your choice.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Go, then.
  • Modu: You will not regret this.

[modu leaves]

  • Yu Ying: Jingjing is out there as well. I'm going to try and find her. You meet up with him as soon as you can.

[yingying leaves] [protag goes to mu us village]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: This marketplace is bustling I hadn't expected so much wealth flowing in through Xiongnu lands. If I'm to move through their lands, I should learn more about their people.

[enters village, approaches what seems to be a fur merchant]

  • Xiongnu merchant: Hello! Are you another Qin trader? Come to trade with me? I assure you I am shrewd!
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Shrewd? That's a strange way to put it...
  • Xiongnu merchant: Yes, yes. A rich Qin merchant who passed by earlier told me that people like me who are shrewd can earn a lot of money!

[to themselves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I don't think that's a compliment... but I can't bear to tell this man the truth.

[to the merchant]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I suppose earning money is a commandable skill...
  • Xiongnu merchant: Yes, yes. That wonderful man even bought furs from me directly, without trading wares! He was so rich he gave me taels.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Really? That's surprising to hear...
  • Xiongnu merchant: Yes, yes. My business has been going great ever since the Qin took over. Good Qin merchants like that man are generous.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: And who might this good merchant be?
  • Xiongnu merchant: That good merchant came with guards and they called him Master Yang. He must have been a noble!

[to themselves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Master Yang? Could it be Yang Duanhe?

[to merchant]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Well, I thank you for your insight. I may have some business with this Master Yang you speak of.
  • Xiongnu merchant: Yes, yes. Always a pleasure to meet a shrewd Qin!

[protag leaves and approaches a herdsman]

  • Herdsman: Look who's come to spit in our faces. A Qin dog.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I'm not here to cause trouble. I just want to learn if anything noteworthy has happened recently with the Xiongnu.
  • Herdsman: Why? So you can exploit us even more? I'll give you something to learn about - my fists!

[another merchant dude approaches, don't think is the same based on the voice actor]

  • Xiongnu merchant: Hold there, brother! There's been enough blood spilled in these lands! Leave him be!

[turns to protag]

  • Xiongnu merchant: I apologize for my friend's behavior. Not all of us are so hostile to the Qin.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Thank you for stepping in. I'm not here to cause trouble, just to find out the recent goings-on of your people.
  • Xiongnu merchant: Ah, you've been rescued by just the right man! I travel through the lands, carrying gossip and whispers town to town. I could tell you anything you want to know! For a fee, of course.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: How much-
  • Xiongnu merchant: A thousand taels!
  • Wei Yu's disciple: That's outr- I can't afford that.
  • Xiongnu merchant: Well then, everything you have will do. If not I can't guarantee I'll be there to stop another fight.

[Herdsman bumps into protag, steals something]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: What-

[gives chase]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Get back here, you scheming cutthroat!

[enters an arena, where the thief calls out to a man built like a mack truck]

  • Herder: There, brother, he's the one that threatened me!
  • Xiongnu brute: You dare threaten my people on my land? [Note: this is Huyan Xiong]

[fight begins]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Threatened? No, I didn't-
  • Xiongnu brute: Qin dog! Even if you kill us, you will never take away our freedom!
  • Wei Yu's disciple: That is not what I'm here for!
  • Xiongnu brute: If you're not fighting for us, then you're fighting against us!
You think you can come into our territory and terrorize our people?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Please, I am not here to fight you! Lay down your weapon!

[before protag kills the man, cutscene] Although you manage to defeat the Xiongnu warrior, more of them step forward and you are clearly outnumbered. Just then, the Xiongnu prisoner you saved leaps into the fray on horseback, calling for the Xiongnu to stand down. To your surprise, they comply and refer to him as prince. He looks at you, knowing he owes you an explanation.

  • Modu: I am not the subordinate of Touman Chanyu. I am Modu ChanYu, [sic] his firstborn son. When we lost the war against your general Meng Tian, my father saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. He gave me to the Qin to broker peace, while installing my youngest brother as the next puppet king. No doubt by attacking the Qin, he hoped the Qin would bloody their hands with my execution so he could keep his clean. But now that I'm back, I will restore order to the Xiongnu. I will end this needless civil war.

[Cá entre nós, tiago, esse cara tá macho palestrinha demais]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: A fine ambition, one I will not stand in the way of. Yet I can't help but worry if you have forgotten our agreement.
  • Modu: I have not. As promised, I will be your guide in these lands. But your motives haven't been entirely clear either... What is it you seek that requires you to risk your life?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: The truth. I'm investigating a possible connection between rogue Qin elements and your people.
  • Modu: Then we seek the same thing. I have indeed suspected my father has had dealings with the Qin. To start, we should investigate a nearby Qin village; my father's men are rumored to be on their way there. His dealings have benefited him at the expense of our people. And those that follow him are cut from the same cloth.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I understand. Take the time you need amongst your own, I will head to the village first.
  • Modu: Do not go easy on them. They are ruthless slavers. Those who would sell their own are not one of us.

The Exile's Plan

[Memory description:] Modu's identity is enough for you to find out the situation outside the city, and you decide to start with the Frontier Village.

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Prince Modu said these men were slavers. I won't hold back when I meet them.

[goes to the Frontier Village]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: The village is under attack! No doubt these are Touman's men.

[fighting begins, finds their leader, whose name keeps changing between Wulei and Wuleidihou, and will use Uluyjoti in a scene further along]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: If I can take down their leader, this raid will end faster.

[boss fight]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: You people are giving the Xiongnu a bad name. You enslave your own kin and even attack those you collude with? Where is your honor?
  • Wulei: You dare attack me? Do you know who I am? I'm Wulei, the Xiongnu prince!

[defeats dude]

  • Wulei: Please, don't kill me! I-I'm a prince! My life has value!
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I heard you the first time, prince. Tell me, are you the son of Touman Chanyu?
  • Wulei: Yes! Yes! You've heard of my father? If you let me go he'll be in your debt.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I doubt he will honor that. He sent you to attack this village even though he claims to be friends with the Qin. I am also aware that your father enslaved his own people for profit.
  • Wulei: Who... Who are you? How do you know that?

[to themselves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I should let this rat go and follow him back to his hideout.

[frees him]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Tell your father that his reckoning is at hand, that the Youxia are here to exact justice.
  • Wulei: Y-Youxia? I'll be sure to deliver that message!

[gets up and starts to leave, with the protag following them]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I'll have to keep up while maintaining my cover.

[protag tails them, eavesdropping a few times, when Wulei stopped to talk to other Xiongnu]

  • Xiongnu scout: My prince, there you are! We thought we had lost you. We sent a few search parties to no avail.
  • Wulei: Your concern is appreciated, I wasn't sure if I could make it back alive...
  • Xiongnu scout: You are safe now, my prince. We will stay here and guard the perimeter.

[continues following them]

  • Xiongnu hunter: My prince, you are back! I am just about to hunt, would you care to join?
  • Wulei: Perhaps another time, I am exhausted today. But my father and I are grateful for the game you always provide.
  • Xiongnu hunter: You are too kind, my prince. Please, rest well.

[continues following them to where the clan is camped]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Hmmm, so this is where Touman Chanyu resides. I'll need to find proof of their collusion with the Qin. Perhaps I can infiltrate the camp as a passing merchant.

[overhears a conversation between two herders as the protag enters the camp]

  • Prudent herder: Haven't seen this merchant before...
  • Proud herder: Another Qin merchant? They don't know when to quit.
  • Xiongnu guard: You! Where do you think you're going? You walk into our camp without wares and a weapon on your back, are you asking for an early death?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I'm a peddling merchant... and I'm here to collect furs for trade. That is why I came empty handed.
  • Xiongnu guard: We weren't informed of any collection today. Who sent you?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Duanhe, the Qin officer, sent me... Surely, you've heard of him? He works with Touman Chanyu.
  • Xiongnu guard: Duanhe? Why didn't you say so earlier? Go on then, but any funny business and you're out of here.

[protag goes to enter the main tent, only to be met with Wulei walking out of it]

  • Wulei: That- That is the Youxia! You dare enter my father's camp after what you did?

[escaping begins]

  • Xiongnu guard: You heard the prince! Kill that scoundrel! Don't let that Qin snake near our Prince!

[runs out of the village and into safety]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I can't take on a whole village by myself. I should return in the evening when they are asleep.

[finds an abandoned camp]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: They've stopped pursuing. This seems like a good place to stake out until the sun goes down.

[time passes]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Under the cover of night, they are less likely to spot an intruder. Grand General Meng Tian is counting on me to find evidence of their collusion with the Qin.

[returns to the camp, eavesdrops on a couple of herders]

  • Timid herder: We can't keep living like this. You promised me a good life! We're no better than slaves here.
  • Prudent herder: Shut it woman, do you want us dead?

[to themselves]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: None of them are safe even from their own people.

[overhears another conversation]

  • Proud herder 1: How are we going to overcome the Qin empire when we fight among ourselves? Why do we enslave our own people?
  • Proud herder 2: We pledged loyalty to Touman only because he's the strongest and we'll never be made slaves.

[infiltrates main tent, finds note]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Touman Chanyu has ordered all the scattered tribes to gather here... This is bad, he's gathering forces.

[goes to another tent, overhears stuff and takes letter from tent]

  • Xiongnu guard: Hah, of course, you don't have to worry.
  • Purple soldier: If Touman keeps up his end of the deal, the next batch of supplies will be coming soon. And don't forget to hand him the missive in the tent. That letter is from my boss, Duanhe.
  • Xiongnu guard: Don't you worry, I will pass the message on if you keep those taels coming.
  • Purple soldier: Good, I'm meeting my boss at the western camp. You keep an eye on Touman and make sure he sticks to the plan.

Yang Duanhe's Secret Letter

Gather your forces on the west side of the wall. I'll personally create an opening for you to pass through.

-Duanhe
  • Wei Yu's disciple: An official agreement between the Qin Department of Immortality and Touman Chanyu! Signed, Duanhe. This is it. I need to get this to Grand General Meng Tian...

[leaves camp]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I have the evidence for the Grand General, but this might be the only chance for me to catch Duanhe... There's no time for second guessing! For Chu Huan's sake... I'll end Duanhe myself.

[heads to the western camp] As you approach the western camp in search of Yang Duanhe, a group of Xiongnu raiders appear from the roadside, hoping to ambush a lonely traveler. [starts to fight off ambush]

  • Xiongnu raider: What luck, an easy target! Hand us everything you've got, even your clothes.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Sorry, I'm not in a giving mood today.
  • Xiongnu raider: There's no one out here to save you, so be good, and we'll let you go easy.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: You raiders are persistent. I'll give you that. But I won't give up just yet...

[protag keeps killing the cannon fodder, but more keep arriving]

  • Xiongnu raider: You really think you can take on all of us?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: How many of them are there? They just keep coming. I can't... keep up...

You clear another wave of Xiongnu warriors, but it seems endless. As fatigue catches up to you, a sudden hail of arrows takes out the oncoming warriors. Modu and his men arrive. He tells the survivors to bring word back to his father that Prince Modu has returned. As they flee, he comes to speak to you.

  • Modu: I have important news. Our scouts have confirmed that the Qin forces have gathered our tribes to the west.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: The west is where I am headed as well. I found evidence, solid evidence, that will get the Grand General on our side.
  • Modu: Good, but you may not make it back in time to your General in time. If my scouts are right, they will attack the wall soon. Seems to be a distraction, to lure your General out. For what reason, I do not know. And I fear my father cares little for their true intent if he can fatten his belly and grow his fortune. Get to Tulu pass [sic] as soon as you can. I have also sent word to your friend, she will be on her way to meet you.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Thank you, Prince Modu. You have saved my life and guided me through your lands.
  • Modu: It was you who saved my life first. Now you can tell your friends that you have a Prince in your debt.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: You are no mere prince. It would do the Xiongnu good for you to become their next King. I pray we meet again.

Battle at the Wall

[Memory description:] Yang Duanhe is in Tulu Pass, between the Great Wall and the Frontier. For Chu Huan, for Jade Spring, you must settle the score with him... [protag arrives at Great Wall Junction]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Prince Modu said he sent Yingying this way as well, she should be nearby.

[approaches her]

  • Yu Ying: It seems that heir collusion goes way back...

[she notices protag]

  • Yu Ying: There you are! I've been searching for Jingjing but she's proven to be rather elusive.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: She said she didn't want to get involved with us. Maybe we should leave her be.
  • Yu Ying: I'm just worried... either way, Modu sent me a message to get here, and I found something way worse... That man, Duanhe, he's here. And they've smuggled a hill's worth of oil barrels to blow up the wall.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: These people know no loyalty. A Qin soldier blowing up the wall, and colluding with the Xiongnu...
  • Yu Ying: Whatever it is they've planned isn't good. We have to stop them.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: What they did to our village, we can't let that happen again.

[goes to destroy the explosives at Tulu Pass, sees Qin soldiers and Xiongnu fighting there.]

  • Qin soldier: You will never strike us down! The Qin will defend our territory.

[enters a warehouse and destroys some of the explosives] [helps the Qin]

  • Qin soldier: Barbarians! Strike them down!

[destroys some more]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: They've already transported some barrels to the wall. I should destroy those as well.

[climbs up, destroys those, but hears/sees an explosion]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: Was I too late? Yingying might be in trouble.

[goes to the source, finding Yang Duanhe messing with the explosives] As you approach Yang Duanhe, he recognizes you and promises to kill you as he killed Chu Huan. He throws an explosive your way but before it reaches you, Yu Ying appears from above and kicks it away, endangering herself as it explodes. In the smoke, Yang Duanhe flees and an injured Yu Ying implores you to follow him. [jarring scene transition to an exploded section of the wall, where the protag goess to fight Yang Duanhe]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: I swear, on the memory of my brother, today will be your last.
  • Yang Duanhe: Big talk for someone who lost to me before. Let's see how you fare against my bombs, I've been itching to test them.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Why did you attack our village? Who do you serve?
  • Yang Duanhe: Hah, and why would I tell you anything? You are but an ant in the grand scheme of things.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: You will regret messing with the Youxia.
  • Yang Duanhe: Oh here we go again, with the righteous talk. You people are sickening.
Disgusting worm, don't you know when to give up? Stop getting in my way.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Quit running, you coward! I will chase you till the ends of the earth even if I have to.

[he escapes, protag climbs up the wall after him, having to deal with guards along the way]

  • Purple sergeant: Stay back! Come no further!
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Your purple garments only fuel my anger. I remember how you slaughtered the weak.

[keeps going towards Duanhe]

  • Purple sergeant: Don't you know who you're up against?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: This is for what you did to my village!

[keeps going towards Duanhe]

  • Yang Duanhe: Argh... I can't... anymore...

[i think there was another voice here, but it all mixes together and there's no subs for that]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: The Fox huh, seems like even Duanhe answers to someone.

You overpower Yang Duanhe and drive your blade through his chest. As Yang Duanhe brethes his last, a figure in a fox mask attempts to assassinate you, but quick reflexes allow you to parry the incoming blade, giving you the chance to engage them in combat. [fight begins against the "Masked Person"]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: So, you're the one in charge... the one pulling the strings under the Grand General's nose.
  • Fox: Hmph. What do you know? You're just a pathetic Youxia. Stay out of my way.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: You pit the Qin and Xiongnu against each other, for what end? We are not your pawns!
  • Fox: There are only two types of people in this world, the sheep or the slaughterer. What are you?
  • Wei Yu's disciple: I'm your slaughterer!
  • Fox: A slaughterer takes. A sheep gives. You, who so boldly claim to take, are no better than the rest of us. Do not act righteous when your hand are soaked with the blood of a thousand sheep.

Your next move knocks the Fox's mask off, revealing Nie Jing's face. Yu Ying and Meng Tian arrive and Nie Jing pulls out the stolen treasure from Yangzhou Palace. A magical shield deflects your blades, shattering and dazzling you. When the stars fade from your vision, she's gone. [protag follows Meng Tian and Yu Ying, while Cyf does not stop opening the menus to make my work harder]

  • Wei Yu's disciple: My search has led me to believe that the Department of Immortality has been manipulating the Xiongnu. I found a written agreement between Toumman Chanyu and Yang Duanhe.
  • Meng Tian: An agreement signed by Duanhe is not enough evidence to persecute the court official in charge. I have looked outwards for far too long... and now the foundations of our empire crumbles. But I won't stay idle, not when my family's position is threatened at court and this country rots from within. I have news that the Department of Immortality has dealings in Shangjun. I seek an eagle. A swift and wary hunter to keep track of a fox that has long evaded my sight.
  • Wei Yu's disciple: Then an eagle I shall be, and I will not stop until the fox [sic] has paid the price of betrayal.
  • Meng Tian: Good. Head to North Shangjun Garrison and Fushi Clay Mine. Find out whatever you can.
