Suyab also known as Suiye (碎葉) was an ancient city that was located along the Silk Road in the Chui River valley, in present-day Kyrgyzstan. The city sprang up in the 5th or 6th centuries as a trade hub for Sogdian merchants. Suyab was the principal capital of the Western turkic Khaganate until it was absorbed into the Tang dynasty in 648 and became one of the four military garrisons of the Western Regions.[1]

Suyab was the birthplace of renowned Chinese poet Li Bai, who authored over one thousand works for the Tang. The city also had a strong presence of the Hidden Ones, whose deeds inspired Li to consider becoming a xiake, a gallant hero in Chinese folklore before he chose to become a government official and a poet.[2]
