Nunobiki Falls is a waterfall near the city of Kobe in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan,[1] formerly part of the province of Izumi Settsu.
History
In the early 1580s, the sōhei Mitsumune of the Ikkō-ikki took shelter at the waterfall along with a number of men after the destruction of their fortress in Osaka. In early 1582, the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe traveled to Nunobiki Falls on behalf of Kyonyo to recruit Mitsumune in their fight against Wada Koretake. Mitsumune was reluctant to do so, as their numbers had greatly diminished following their war against Oda Nobunaga as well as him having lost the statue of Shinran entrusted by him to protect. Wishing to get his support, Naoe volunteered to help Mitsumune recover the statue.[2]
