"To stand in the way of you and Mercia is my duty. I will die before I yield."
―Leofrith to Eivor, 873.[src]-[m]

Leofrith was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman who served as a thegn to King Burgred of Mercia during the late 9th century, until the king's deposal by the Sons of Ragnar with help from Sigurd Styrbjornson, Eivor Varinsdottir, and Ceolwulf.

Biography

Leofrith came to serve as a thegn of King Burgred during the early Viking incursions into England. As a fellow thegn alongside Ceolwulf, Leofrith was a friend to Ceolwulf's son Ceolbert, having taught him how to wield a sword.[1] In one battle against the Sons of Ragnar, Leofrith rallied a group of men to ambush Ragnarsson's War Camp. During the chaos, Ivarr the Boneless threw an axe towards Leofrith in an attempt to cleave him into half. However, Leofrith survived the attack and took possession of the axe, which he gave to King Burgred as a token of fealty.[2]

At the Siege of Tamworth, Leofrith stood aside with Burgred while he spoke with the Ragnarssons. Even though Leofrith tried to convince Burgred to consider their offers, Burgred refused with anger. He left Tamworth either during or before the battle begun.[3]

After the fall of Tamworth, Leofrith began to order food to be stored in Ledecestre's Church and in old bathhouse, secure Lady Æthelswith in Templebrough, and ordered one of her servants to acts as a decoy. He returned to Ledecestre's Bathhouse to check the progress which Ceolbert eavesdropped on.[3]

Following the fall of Templebrough and Ledecestre, Leofrith led an army to burn down Repton. Leofrith chased Ceolbert down a street where he challenged him to a duel. Eivor came to the rescue and tried to reason with him as the attacking army had been defeated and there was no need for more blood to be spilled. Regardless, Leofrith fought with Eivor and lost, presenting her with the choice to kill or spare him. If she spared him, he warned her of a scroll in Venonis that would cause all Zealots to hunt her, before leaving England for Rome.[4]

Behind the Scenes

Leofrith is a character in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla.

If Eivor choose to spare Leofrith in the memory Heavy is the Head, he can later be encountered in Lincolnshire, where he awaits a boat to take him to Rome to deal with Burgred.
