Kalf was a Viking warrior and part of the Great Heathen Army.

Biography

At some point, while the Great Heathen army was at what would later become Ravensthorpe,[1] Kalf was stationed as a lookout. Noticing the arrival of Anglo-Saxon mercenaries, Kalf made the decision to sound the alarm by loosing a flaming arrow at Ubba Ragnarsson's longship because he was so high up that he would not be heard. After the fight was over, Ubba was enraged by the loss of his ship and blamed Kalf for the attack, breaking the warrior's armring in retaliation, exiling him from the clan, and leaving him behind as the Great Army moved on.[2]

Some time later, during the Oskoreia festival, he made his way to Ravensthorpe, used some charcoal to write his name on the Ship of the Dead and left to die by himself.[2]

Legacy

Upon noticing Kalf's name on the ship's hull with no message attached, Eivor Varinsdottir investigated who wrote it, discovering his fate. She then returned to the ship and carved an accompanying message, honoring him.[2]
