Hrólfr was a semi-legendary figure in Norse mythology who was said to have scattered gold across the Fyrisvellir as a distraction for the pursuing forces of king Eaglis to enable his escape.

While crossing the Fyrisvellir to assassinate Styrbjörn the Strong in the 10th century, Thorvald Hjaltason found a piece of hack-gold in the dirt and considered that there may indeed have been truth to the legend before realising that Hrólfr's ploy could be useful for his own strategy.
