Mackandal was an enemy of the Mentor of the Louisianan Assassins, Agate, and operated primarily in the Bayou of New Orleans.
Sometime in 1765, Mackandal had amassed a small following, though he sent a letter to one of his acolytes stating that he was "in want of nothing but more men to join [his] ranks" for a "sacred ceremony".
However, this letter was intercepted by the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, shortly after she had assassinated the troops at one of his bases, a wrecked ship in the marshlands, with the smuggler Élise providing her with the information and transport to get there.
