Engelwin (died 886) was a Frankish high-ranking clergyman who served as a Bishop of Paris during the 9th century. A member of the religious zealotical Bellatores Dei,[1] he was responsible for killing the Viking leader Sinric of the Elgring Clan, the father of Toka Sinricsdottir and the brother of fellow Viking leader Sigfred.
Biography
Not much is known about Bishop Engelwin, except for his medical history of amyloidosis, which caused the skin around his eyes to darken. However, during his tenure as Bishop, Engelwin became one of the opponents against a clan of Vikings, led by brothers Sinric and Sigfred. During his time, Engelwin was personally responsible for the ambush and murder of Sinric, which led to Sigfred and Sinric's daughter, Toka, to vouch for revenge.[2]
The Siege of Paris
When the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan answered Toka's desire to help fight the forces of King Charles, Eivor arrived in Melun and became situated with the current jarl, Sigfred. When talking with Sigfred and Toka about the past siege, conducted by Ragnar Lothbrok, their meeting was cut short when Sigfred's warriors heard commotion outside the longhouse. Checking it for themselves, Eivor, Sigfred, and Toka went outside to see Frankish soldiers, led by Bishop Engelwin. Engelwin ambushed the settlement, killed the previous warriors, and declared to want both Sigfred and Eivor dead. Engelwin left the village as he commanded his men to finish up. However, Eivor and her allies defeated the invaders and surmised that Engelwin was the current issue.[2]
Toka admitted to Eivor that Sigfred's quick departure meant that he was going to find Engelwin and that Eivor should follow. Eivor left Melun and found Sigfred in the slums of Paris. During Odo's speech, Sigfred agreed with Eivor's plan to assassinate Engelwin, while he dealt with the guards, sent by both Odo and Bishop Gozlin. Eivor looked around the slums for any clues about how to infiltrate Sainte-Geneviève Church and where the bishop may be. Throughout her investigation, Eivor found out that Engelwin was stealing tithes from the church to finance his own plans and that people were being taken for "deliverance," by his own accord.[3]
Death and legacy
From her searches, Eivor infiltrated the church and found herself looking for the bishop. After finding the next person for deliverance, Eivor convinced the man to switch places as she changed her attire to wear the Bellatores Robe to gain access. Going down an underground passage, Eivor found herself in Engelwin's sanctum, where the bishop was whipping another man. From her point of view, Eivor deduced how to end the bishop's life. Within a moment, Eivor found her opening and assassinated the bishop. From Engelwin's personal effects, Eivor garnered a key and a strange chest.[3]
After searching, Eivor used a key on a locked door near the entrance of the sanctum. Inside, Eivor found wealth, retrieved a scythe, the Scythe of Revolt, took note of a strange symbol, and read his documents. From the documents, Eivor saw Engelwin's inner conflicts and correspondence with King Charles about the attack on Melun. From here, Eivor knew where to find King Charles, whom she had initially planned to talk with.[4]
Behind the scenes
Engelwin's manner of death may be vary, as Eivor has the option to either attack him head-on, use the situational opportunities to get close, or stealthily assassinate the bishop without raising any suspicion.
