Downpatrick Head

Downpatrick Head is a rock formation, or sea stack, off the coast of northern Connacht, Ireland.

History[edit | edit source]

In the late 9th century, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir searched and climbed up Downpatrick Head. On the top level, she came across a lost drengr, Hogne Sea-Tossed, one of Thorgest's former soldiers. Talking with Hogne, she was informed that he wanted to go to Valhalla and see his late king. Eivor obliged and fought with the drengr, defeating him in combat. After sending Hogne to Valhalla, she obtained the Dublin Champion Breeches from Hogne's personal effects.[1]

From her travels, Eivor also found and claimed a treasure hoard map on the floor level of the sea stack.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Its Gaelic name, Dún Briste, means "broken fort."
