Domrémy-la-Pucelle (English: Domrémy [of] the Maid), originally just named Domrémy, is a commune in the Vosges department in Grand Est in northeastern France.
The village was renamed to reflect Jeanne d'Arc's nickname, la Pucelle d'Orléans ("the Maid of Orléans"), Domrémy being her birthplace.
History
On 1 May 1428, during the May Day festival, Gabriel Laxart met his step-cousins; Pierre, Jean, and Jeanne. Gabriel fell in love with Jeanne at first sight.[1] Sometime after 12 May, after Jeanne first returned from Vacouleurs, residents of Domrémy were evacuated south to Neufchâteau. Once they returned they found their church burned down.[2]
