The Bolsheviks were a faction of radical Russian Marxists founded by Vladimir Lenin. They formed the Russian Communist Party, seized power in the nation during the Russian Revolution and subsequently established the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Their main military arm was the Red Army,[1] but they also created several security and enforcement agencies, two of which were the People's Commissarist for Internal Affairs (NKVD) and the Cheka.[2] The latter played an extensive role in perpetrating the Red Terror, a violent campaign of repression against political dissidents to the Bolshevik vision.[3] Apart from this, there was the Workers' and Peasants' Militia, a civilian force which lacked professional combat training but provided the Bolsheviks with a large pool of cheap fighters.[4]
