Daniel Cross was a Templar sleeper agent who infiltrated the Brotherhood, rose through the ranks, and then killed their Mentor, which allowed the Templars to launch a massive, coordinated attack on the Brotherhood called "The Great Purge."
Although it looked like the Assassins were trying to bounce back, there must have been another Purge or something in the recent past, because the Assassins I'm running around with seem to be running on fumes.
