William III (William Henry; 1650 – 1702) was sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s and King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1689 until his death. As King of Scotland, he was known as William II.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1688, William invaded England and replaced James II in what became known as the Glorious Revolution.[1] During the Great Recoinage of 1696, King William tasked the Secretary to the Treasury William Lowndes to seek out the Royal Mint's warden Isaac Newton for help. Lowndes, in turn, tasked the British Assassin Omar Khaled to do so.[2]
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 1695, the city of Nassau in New Providence, originally named Charles-Towne, was renamed after his House's progeny, the House of Nassau,[3] following being destroyed and rebuilt.[4]
