Wemba was a gravedigger for Saint Peter's Church in Wincester, England, during the late 9th century.
Around 877, a plot by Bishop Ealhferth had Wemba's friend Leof killed and his face burned off. Wemba witnessed this, but could not process exactly what had happened. Later, during Ealhferth's "funeral", Wemba told Eivor Varinsdottir what he understood, that Leof had his face stolen while he slept, giving her enough information to figure out what Ealhferth was planning.[1]
