Ulf (died c. 876) was a Viking warrior under the command of Faravid and Halfdan Ragnarsson. He was one of the warriors fighting against the Picts during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

A foot soldier serving under Faravid in Northumbria, Ulf was a proud and loyal warrior but grew to resent those who benefitted from battles without participating in them directly, such as his jarl Halfdan.[1]

In 876, while arguing with Faravid about his need for glory and his desire for a fair share of the spoils from their battles, Ulf met the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir, who came to speak with Faravid on Halfdan's behalf. Ulf showed quick judgment of Eivor's relationship with Halfdan, and his remarks led to Eivor threatening him. As Faravid dismissed Ulf from their conversation, Ulf disrespectfully spat on the ground, in regards to Eivor's presence.[1]

Soon after, Ulf joined the rest of Faravid's men in their march towards the Picts and, during the journey, remarked that he would have preferred to stay in Donecaestre instead of fighting. When the Viking warriors engaged a group of Pictish scouts, Ulf shouted out his name and glory for himself aloud. After taking over Stenwege Camp, Ulf was quick to claim the Picts' war spoils kept at the camp, including their Frankish wine, which he offered to share with Eivor and Faravid. However, he refused to give a share of the spoils to Halfdan, resulting in a brief argument between him and Faravid. After discussing the fight against the Picts, Eivor left Faravid but overheard Ulf criticizing Halfdan.[1]

Later, while investigating the disappearance of Halfdan's war spoils, the jarl and Eivor discovered them to be stored in a treasure room at the Petuaria Ruins, and ran into Ulf and his men moments later. Despite his warm salutations, Ulf was immediately accused by Halfdan of betraying him and stealing his treasures. Ulf attempted to defuse the situation, claiming that the war spoils had been a gift from Faravid. As Halfdan next accused Ulf of murdering his scout Olav, the latter was surprised and revealed that Olav had been killed after being mistaken for a thief.[2]

Refusing to believe Ulf's explanations, Halfdan prepared to execute the warrior for his apparent treason as Ulf pleaded with Eivor to make the jarl see reason. Although Eivor gave her opinion on the situation, Ulf's fate was sealed, as he was soon killed for his apparent crimes.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

When deciding Ulf's fate, Eivor may choose to try and convince Halfdan to spare him and his men, only for Halfdan to execute Ulf with his hammer, prompting his men to flee in fear. Otherwise, Ulf and his men will attack Eivor and Halfdan, who will kill them all. If Ulf's men survive, they will later join Halfdan's army in attacking Magnis Fortress during the memory "Honor's Hubris".
