―Stowe describing Tryggr to Eivor, 873.[src]-[m]

Tryggr (died 873) was the governor of Lunden during the city's occupation by the Great Heathen Army in the 9th century, serving from 869 until his death.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Governor of Lunden[edit | edit source]

A Viking from Norway, Tryggr joined the Great Heathen Army during the Viking expansion into England, where he came to serve under Ubba Ragnarsson and Guthrum, becoming a close companion of the former.[1]

In 869, Tryggr was present when the Vikings occupied the city of Lunden nestled between the borders of Mercia and Wessex, which they used to launch incursions into Wessex. When both Ubba and Guthrum headed north and south to combat the kingdoms of Northumbria and Wessex respectively, Tryggr remained behind in Lunden, and became its governor some time in the early 870s.[1]

With the absence of the Viking army, Tryggr employed the use of reeves to keep the peace in the city. He first employed the Norse Erke Bodilsson, whose father Bodil Bodilsson had previously served as the city's governor until his death. He then recruited Stowe, a Saxon who was raised in the Lundenwic Abbey. The two became Tryggr's right and left-hand man, governing both the eastern and western sections of the city.[2]

Death[edit | edit source]

Tryggr's body discovered by Erke, Stowe and Eivor

In 873, Tryggr received a letter from an individual known by the pseudonym of "A Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ", warning him of an ancient order seeking to infiltrate Lunden and end his rule. As Tryggr confided in both reeves on the matter, he soon received another letter from the same individual, who gave him the names of three members of the order operating in the city: The Leech, The Arrow, and The Compass. Before he could take action, said individuals attacked Tryggr in his home, killing his guards and beheading him on his seat.[2]

Shortly after, Tryggr's headless body was found by Erke and later on by Stowe, accompanied by Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan. Eivor aided the two reeves in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the governor's death, as well as dismantling the plot orchestrated by the ancient order. Tryggr was then given a proper burial by Stowe.[2]
