Smith and Company Brewery

The Smith and Company Brewery was a brewery located in New York City during the 18th century.

History[edit | edit source]

The company was founded in 1752 by Jonas and Elias Smith, and by 1775, it was the largest of its kind in New York. While Jonas was a Loyalist, he still provided beer to George Washington's troops when they occupied the city.[1]

During the Seven Years' War, the brewery was used as a headquarter by a gang affiliated with the Colonial Asssassins, before being captured by the former Assassin Shay Cormac for the Templar Order.[2]

In 1778, after the British captured New York, the factory was abandoned and became a hideout for Benjamin Church, a traitor to both the Continental Army and the Templar Order.[3] The Grand Master Haytham Kenway and his Assassin son Connor entered the building to apprehend Church, and during the ensuing struggle with Church's mercenaries, the brewery was set on fire, but not before the pair had learned that Church had fled to Martinique on the Welcome. Connor and Haytham then climbed to the top of the burning structure and crashed through a door on the upper floors, landing safely in the harbor below.[4]

In 2012, the Smith and Company Brewery was used as a simulated location by the entertainment branch of Abstergo Industries, in order to influence the general public through the console stage of the Animus technology. In the simulation, at the center of the brewery lay its courtyard, a wide open space with various goods and barrels of beer stacked on top of one another. Other points of interests included the tavern, which was adjoined by some stables, the boiling room, the fermentation room and a vast space used for storage. With the implementation of new technology, simulated locations in the console stage were upgraded to have multiple aesthetic variations. Because of this, the brewery could be utilized during the day, night, or amidst a storm.[5]
