Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island country and city-state in Southeast Asia, located off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.

History

18th century

In March 1725, the Fenghuang captained by the Zhang Wei Union docked in Singapore following the events that had transpired in the Sultanate of Sulu. There, the crew took time to recover and replenish their supplies. While Edward Kenway remained bedridden and was tended to by a local doctor, Yun Pyeong-Gyu and John Young mourned the loss of Xialun Qing and strived to move on in their own ways: Yun by focusing on his work, and John by drinking his sorrows away at the pub. With their crewmates in no condition to help, Shimazu Saito and Rupiya took it upon themselves to repair the Fenghuang and gather supplies.

After Edward partially recovered and went to a pub, he accidentally got into an altercation with two sailors. The fight was broken up by Edward's wife, Tessa Kenway, who had traveled from London to find her husband. Following their reunion, Edward introduced Tessa to Saito, who had come to investigate the commotion, and Tessa asked the samurai to find her step-daughter Jennifer, who had stowed away on her ship and had left to find Edward by herself. Saito soon found Jennifer being chased by pirates and saved her, earning her the young girl's admiration.

Meanwhile, Edward and Tessa returned to the latter's lodgings, where Tessa looked after her husband and informed him that the Assassins had learned about a Templar plot to eliminate him. When Edward began to doubt himself, believing that all his actions were meaningless and that he could not protect his loved ones from the fates that awaited them, Tessa helped him regain his resolve. The two then spent the night together, leading to the conception of their son, Haytham Kenway.

The following day, Edward bid farewell to his family and joined the rest of the Fenghuang's crew as they all left Singapore to resume their quest for the Pieces of Eden.

Modern times

In 2023, after going rogue and escaping from Abstergo Industries, Shimazu Sei, Yuki, and Noa Kim were brought to Singapore by Nathan Zhang, where they holed up in a Zhawang Corporation safehouse in Chinatown. There, Sei set up a makeshift Animus HR-8 to relive Shimazu Saito's memories in the hopes of locating a Piece of Eden that could free Noa from the control of the crescent amulet he had found.

When Sei began to suffer from the Bleeding Effect, Noa volunteered to take her place in the Animus. Against Sei's protests, he used the machine to explore Edward Kenway's memories, which ultimately revealed the location of a Piece of Eden in the Shwedagon Pagoda. Sei, Noa, Yuki, and Nathan subsequently prepared to depart Singapore and travel to Myanmar, but were forced to evade Abstergo, who had managed to track them down.

Thanks to an anonymous tip-off by Nathan, which misdirected Abstergo's Sigma Team to a different building, the group was able to flee their safehouse undetected. However, Sigma Team soon caught up to them in a back alley, initiating a fight which Sei, Noa, Yuki, and Nathan won. The group then boarded a seaplane and flew to a cargo ship which would bring them to Myanmar.

Behind the scenes

Singapore is a country and location that was first mentioned in the 2012 video game Assassin's Creed III before appearing in the 2023 webtoon Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple. Singapore's appearance in the webtoon, set in 1725, is anachronistic, as it depicts the city as having European architecture and a port, something it would not possess until a century later when it became a British colony. At this point in time, only a small settlement is confirmed to have existed on the island.

Additionally, Singapore would not have been referred to by its current name in 1725, as it was better known as Singapura or Temasek at the time.
