Scarborough is a town on the North Sea coast of Yorkshire, England, built over and occupying the site of a former Roman fort and later a Viking settlement established during the 12th century.
History[edit | edit source]
In 876, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir returned Beonton and his hammer to Halfdan Ragnarsson, who waited at the bottom of Scarborough. As Eivor returned the hammer, Halfdan recounted the hammer's origin and stated that his father, Ragnar Lothbrok, handed him the hammer at fourteen. Halfdan also recounted how his mother died and how Ragnar avenged him. However, his tone soured as he stated that Ragnar died here, in a pit of snakes, and asked Eivor about Ivarr's death. Eivor stated how she decided on Ivarr's fate to Valhalla but more on that his people need him.[1]
Beonton soon greeted his master and Halfdan agreed to go back to Jorvik to rule. However, Halfdan asked Eivor to light the beacon atop Scarborough's tower for everyone to see. After lighting the beacon, she heard Halfdan thank her as he stated that she was welcome in his hall anytime.[1]
Throughout her travels, Eivor found a dead fisherman, who was crushed by a boulder, at the bottom of Scarborough. Among his personal effects, Eivor found a love letter to his wife in Picheringa and an anniversary ring. Thus, Eivor left the area and headed to meet the widow.[2] In fact, Eivor also found a viewpoint atop the same tower and synchronized the viewpoint.[3]
