Roland (died 778) was a military governor under Charlemagne who was later revered as a legendary and iconic figure amongst the Franks.

In 886, the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found and claimed his famed sword Durendal for herself in the town of Aquila while aiding Sigfred's efforts in laying siege to Paris.[1]
