Muspelheim Monoliths

The Muspelheim Monoliths were giant floating rocks made from Múspellsheimr's that surrounded all of Svartálfaheimr during Surtr's invasion. According to the Prose Edda, [citation needed] which only alludes to the monoliths' existence, they were designed to transport Muspel warriors and anything of importance.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time in Svartalfheim, the Æsir lord Havi saw many of these monoliths hovering around the realm. While exploring Svaladal, Havi assisted the dwarven blacksmith Skavi in finding his crow Kraka, who was last seen flying to the monolith above Skavi. Havi activated his Hugr-Rip's "Power of the Raven" to fly to the monolith and saw Muspel warriors cornering a jötunn prisoner. After killing the warriors, Havi learned from the prisoner could shapeshift, making the jötunn and the crow the same being. When Havi agreed to find the monolith's treasure for Skavi, Kraka transformed into a crow and flew away. Havi then found an ember of Muspelheim and presented the treasure to Skavi as Kraka's last gift.[2]

Throughout his time in Svartalfheim, Havi would periodically activate his Hugr-Rip to fly to the rest of the monoliths and acquire all nine of the embers, which he then used to upgrade the Hugr-Rip's abilities.[3]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

In Eddie Bennun's below concept piece for Dawn of Ragnarök, the third downloadable expansion for the 2020 video game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, the monoliths were initially envisioned as burning, flying longships that were part of "Muspell's Fleet". Developers later created the monoliths instead because they were "more interesting and provid[ed] unique game-play opportunities" that longships lacked.[4]
