The Monument of Melissa

The Monument of Melissa was the memorial shrine erected for the wife of Periander, the tyrant of Korinth, in Hera's Watch in Argolis, Greece.

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the shrine-memorial.[1]

  • The name 'Melissa' was a nickname given by Periander to his wife Lyside.
  • Μέλισσᾰ (mélissa) is Greek for '(honey) bee', and poetically used of honey itself, said to be because of the nymph Melissa. The plural of the term, melissai, was also a term used of the priestesses of mystery cults in the Greek world.[2]
