Martha's Vineyard is a small island off the coast of Massachusetts, United States, that is part of the Elizabeth Islands.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1773, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, better known as Connor, and his first mate Robert Faulkner sailed to Martha's Vineyard on the Aquila, which had recently been rebuilt. After docking the Aquila, the two Assassins entered an inn run by Amanda Bailey, where Faulkner recruited David and Richard Clutterbuck.[1]

Meanwhile, Connor noticed the Templars Nicholas Biddle and Benjamin Church sitting nearby and aggressively asked for Charles Lee's whereabouts. However, he was ignored as Biddle pushed him aside and began taunting Faulkner upon finding him with the boy. Before tensions could escalate, Bailey had the men leave to prevent a fight in her inn. As the Assassins sailed home, the Aquila was attacked by several British frigates, but managed to fend them off.[1]

Later, the Aquila returned to Martha's Vineyard to investigate reports of British gunboats threatening the area. Connor discovered naval mines and Templars occupying Fort Phoenix; after destroying them and ensuring the safety of the merchant ships in the area, the Aquila returned home.[2] As Connor would later discover, the British raids had been organized by Nicholas Biddle to convince the Continental Congress to expand their navy.[3]

The following year, on 12 January 1774, Benjamin Church reported his encounter with Connor in Martha's Vineyard to Grand Master Haytham Kenway and the other Colonial Templars during a meeting at the Restless Ghost tavern in Boston.[4]
