Mari

Mari is Kō Risa's younger cousin on her mother's side and as such refers to her as "Aunt". Along with Risa, she later joined the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins.

Biography

Early life

During her childhood, Mari lived in an abusive household as her father would beat her over any small infraction. One night, she was sent outside in the cold and was caught by her cousin Risa. Instantly going back inside, Mari remained silent while Risa confronted her uncle.

After Risa promised to house Mari, Mari's father grabbed Risa and threw her over the railing much to Mari's dismay. Fortunately, Risa survived with minor injuries and Mari left her father's custody, moving in with her grandfather.

Introduction to the Assassins

One day in 2019, Mari entered a restaurant in Yokohama and found her aunt. Asking her where her cousin Risa was, her mother replied that she was running late. After Risa ended her therapy session for the day, Mari found her cousin in the streets of Yokohama. At a café, the girls talked about Risa's time in the Animus but were interrupted by Kiyoshi Takakura, who offered his card and stated that "the war is still raging on", before leaving.

The next day, Mari and Risa met with Kiyoshi at a secret location, where he divulged that both the Assassins and Templars were still active and that Risa's doctor, Kaori Kagami, was a Templar. However, Risa refused to believe the accusations against Dr. Kagami and left to continue her therapy.

Mari stayed with Kiyoshi and listened as he explained how the Animus may cause some side effects. Before Kiyoshi could say more, an elderly woman arrived and asked Mari if she was willing to take the plunge for Risa, to which she accepted. Mari and Kiyoshi then continued their conversation as the latter explained that Risa would become expendable the moment Dr. Kagami found what she was looking for in her genetic memories.

Worried about Risa's safety, Mari found her cousin on the streets after one of her therapy sessions and tried to warn her about what Kiyoshi had said. During their conversation, Mari told Risa how the Assassins had overrun a facility in Madrid, where Dr. Kagami used to work. However, this failed to dissuade Risa from continuing her sessions with the doctor, as she sought to fully understand Shao Jun's memories. Mari later contacted Kiyoshi, who promised to keep an eye on Risa and Dr. Kagami for her.

Joining the Brotherhood

Sadly, Mari was soon called by Kiyoshi, who told her that Dr. Kagami had forced Lisa into the Animus and would dispose of her after learning the location of Shao Jun's "treasure". Kiyoshi then promised that he would rescue her cousin and Mari insisted that she accompany him, to which the Assassin accepted. Breaking into the Abstergo facility, Kiyoshi took down most of the guards while Mari saved him from a hidden guard, whom she knocked out with a fire extinguisher.

Eventually, the two came across Risa, who had freed herself from Dr. Kagami and held her at gunpoint. After Risa decided to spare the doctor and destroy her Animus instead, she, Mari and Kiyoshi left the facility and were greeted by the same elderly woman who had approached Mari earlier.

The woman identified herself as Saeko Mochizuki, the Mentor of the Japanese Assassins, and offered Risa a chance to join the Brotherhood. When Risa accepted, Mari asked to join as well, which Saeko accepted. Afterwards, both girls were tasked by Saeko to find Shao Jun's Precursor box, a task which she claimed may take several years.
