Magnis Fortress in the 9th century

The Magnis Fortress was a Roman fort attached to the western portion of Hadrian's Wall, located in the northwest corner of Yorkshire, England. It was later used as a stronghold and staging area by the Picts for their incursions into Northumbria.

History[edit | edit source]

In 876, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir joined Faravid and his men at the camp outside the fortress as Ljufvina Bjarmarsdottir rallied the men together. Upon their arrival, Faravid and Eivor were met by Halfdan Ragnarsson, who was outraged at this unsanctioned war. Ljufvina calmed down the tensions and asked all to prepare for the upcoming battle. She also noticed that the Picts had sent out an emissary ahead of the battle, whom Halfdan and Eivor went to meet.[1]

The Picts and the Norse warriors traded insults before Halfdan and Eivor asked for the Picts' surrender. However, the Pict warrior revealed that King Ricsige of Northumbria had betrayed Halfdan and sided with them, summoning his fyrd to join the fight against Halfdan's army. Furious, Halfdan threw his war hammer and ordered his men to commence their assault on the fortress. Together, the Vikings and their allies fought against the Picts and Ricsige's men, defeating them and taking over the fortress. Amidst the siege, Ricsige fled, but Eivor chased and killed him. Afterwards, Halfdan declared that he would personally rule Northumbria and returned to Jorvik to be crowned king.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The fortress is a mixture of Roman and Pictish architecture.[2]
