Louis XVIII (1755 – 1824), born Louis Stanislas Xavier, Comte de Provence, was King of France from 1814 to his death, except for a brief return to exile during the Hundred Days of 1815.
Biography[edit | edit source]
After Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated, the House of Bourbon was restored as the royal house of France, and Louis took the throne as the constitutional monarch, a title previously held by his brother, Louis XVI, and nominally by his nephew, Louis XVII.[1]
In 1820, King Ferdinand VII of Spain was disempowered and forced to restore the 1812 Constitution by a military uprising, starting a period known as the Trienio Liberal, during which a liberal government ruled Spain. However, this period ended in 1823 when Louis XVIII ordered the French army to intervene and reinstate Ferdinand's absolute power.[2]
Louis was the last French monarch to die while reigning. Following his death, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Charles X.[1]
