| This article is about the in-universe video game. You may be looking for its real world counterpart. |

Liberation is a 2012 video game developed in partnership by Abstergo Entertainment and Ubisoft. The game follows the story of Aveline de Grandpré, daughter of the wealthy French merchant Philippe de Grandpré and his placée bride Jeanne.[1]
Development[edit | edit source]
Compiled from genetic memory recordings collected from Subject 1,[2] the game presents a heavily distorted view of Aveline's life, omitting any overt mention of the Assassins and Templars and portraying Aveline's false defection to the latter as genuine. In response to this, the hacking collective known as Erudito actively worked to re-introduce the truth into the game, allowing players to view the full extent of Aveline's memories.[1]
Despite Erudito's actions, including alerting players to the fact that the developing staff interviewed in promotional videos were actually hired actors,[3] Liberation was considered such a success that it prompted Abstergo Industries to expand their entertainment branch to Montreal and hire research analysts for their next project.[4] In 2013, the Montreal office had advertisements for the game routinely displayed on its walls and screens.[5]

In August 2014, Abstergo Entertainment's CCO Melanie Lemay sent an email to Kristina Uhrich about a possible follow-up to Liberation, having found footage of Aveline's time in the northwestern American region of New England in 1784, though she recognized that it would take some resources they did not have at the time.[6] The sequel game was later released on Helix as The Liberation of Lady Aveline.[7]
