Leonard Hazlewood was a British private detective active in the mid-19th century.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1862, Hazlewood was in the employ of a viscount that had been attacked in the Maylebone churchyard alongside two bodyguards and a friend who lost his life in the incident. The private detective was then hired to find and detain their attacker. Hazlewood decided that the best course of his investigation was to tail police constable Frederick Abberline, who ended up confronting him. Abberline did not much care about the case until Hazlewood revealed that the attacker had been an "Indian boy with bare feet", remarking as well that he was an acrobat.[2] Abberline hauled Hazlewood to the division sergeant's office to support his case before heading to confirm the identity of the attacker.[3]

Hazlewood later met with Marchant and Cavanagh at the Travellers Club to discuss the belief that the latter's employee Bharat Singh was the attacker, to which Cavanagh said they would conduct their own investigations and would get back to Hazlewood.[4]
