Katasraj Temple's external architecture

Katasraj Temple is a Hindu temple complex located in the Punjab in Pakistan, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1841, the temple was in the custody of the British Rite of the Templar Order, operating under the guise of the East India Company, and was used by the Templar Alexander Burnes as a prison for the Assassin Arbaaz Mir, who had been captured in Herat, Afghanistan.[1]

Breaking free and killing a number of soldiers on lookout duty, Arbaaz fled through the temple to avoid a mortar bombardment meant to kill him until he reached a central courtyard where he met Burnes again. After Arbaaz defeated Burnes in a lengthy duel,[2] he left the temple to pursue the Master Templar William Sleeman, who had captured Ranjit Singh's summer palace in Amritsar and held Arbaaz's lover Pyara Kaur hostage.[3]
