Ratonhnhaké:ton and Kanen'tó:kon in John's Town

John's Town is a town in the state of New York, named for Sir William Johnson. It was the location of his home, Johnson Hall, which was guarded by mercenaries.

Iroquois Chiefs convened at Johnson Hall in 1774 to negotiate Johnson buying their land. Kanen'tó:kon alerted Ratonhnhaké:ton to the meeting, and the latter assassinated Johnson when he ordered his men to threaten the Chiefs with muskets. He then promptly fled and dived into a lake.[1]

The area was populated by elk, bears, foxes, and hares, making it a profitable hunting region.[2]
