Hrolf (died 870s), also known as Hrolf the Watcher, was a Norseman who lived during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

At one point during the 870s, he and his clan members arrived in northern Northumbria and were promised green lands and lots of food. They quickly captured a fort east of the Brunton Turret along Hadrian's Wall,[1] but in the following years, all but Hrolf died. He then put himself in charge of lighting the braziers on the wall to fend off the darkness which would otherwise creep into the area.[2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

At a later point during the 870s, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan encountered his corpse sitting on a throne atop a wall at the eastern part of Hadrian's Wall after dying in the cold weather.[3]
