The High Druids was one of two classifications in the Children of Danu, a druidic cult that operated in the Norse-Gaelic kingdoms of Ireland in the late 9th century. The High Druids directly served the cult's Ollamh Druid, known only as "The Oak."[1]
History[edit | edit source]
The High Druids was a branch of the Children of Danu during late 9th century Ireland. This branch consisted of four members and each member worked in concocting various fatal poisons, conjuring up effective fogs, or convincingly recruiting new acolytes for the cult.[1]
During the rise of Flann Sinna as High King of Ireland, the Children of Danu's attempt on his life failed, due to the intervention of the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir and her cousin, Bárid mac Ímair, King of Dublin. After the successful siege of Cashelore by Flann, Bárid, and Eivor,[2], Flann's army was soon poisoned that night. Accusations were made against Bárid, while Ciara and Eivor looked for the both the truth and the cure. Heading to Ciara's friend and druid priestess, Deirdre Na Linni, for a cure, Eivor heard from both ladies that the Children of Danu was responsible for the poison. After The Wren's death, Eivor found out about a High Druid's hand in making the poison, as the cryptonym of "The Cursed" was found on Niamh's personal effects.[3]
After collecting clues about The Cursed, Eivor met with Ciara later as Ciara led the way towards The Cursed's ritual. Walking into the High Druid's ritual, Eivor found out her identity, Sétnae. As they defeated The Cursed, Eivor and Ciara heard from Sétnae that Ciara was part of their cult, unknown to everyone else. After Sétnae's death, Eivor recovered her amber shard and clues about other members of the cult.[4] After The Cursed's demise, Eivor agreed to find and hunt down the rest of the Children of Danu, especially the High Druids.[5]
Through her investigative hunt, Eivor took part in assassinating The Ash at Kesh Corann, The Mist at the Doon Fort, and The Whisper in the bogs of Meath. From their deaths, Eivor recovered their amber shards and more clues about the other members of the Children of Danu.[5]
